This agrees with what Christ said more than once. Those who lift themselves up will be brought low. People who try to win respect by acting above their place, putting on airs, speaking proudly, dressing finely, and praising themselves will do the opposite of what they want. They will bring shame on themselves, lose their good name, and may face God’s humbling ways, which bring them down and humble them.
Those who humble themselves will be honored, and their honor will be secure. Honor supports a humble spirit. Their humility itself becomes their honor, and it makes them truly great and safely great. It also wins the respect of all who are wise and good.
