Here is the folly of indulging sin by softening it, excusing it, denying it, lessening it, hiding it, or blaming others for it. “He who covers his sins will not prosper” means he should not expect success in doing so. His effort to hide sin will fail, because it will be found out sooner or later. Nothing hidden will stay hidden forever. “A bird of the air shall carry the voice,” and sins will also come to light.

He will not prosper because he will not receive forgiveness for his sin, and he cannot have true peace of conscience. David admitted that he was in constant misery while he kept his sins covered (Psalm 32:3-4). As a sick person cannot expect healing while hiding the illness, so a sinner cannot expect recovery while hiding guilt.

The blessing comes from turning from sin, both by honest confession and by a real change of life. Whoever confesses his guilt to God and is careful not to return to sin will find mercy with God, and he will feel that mercy in his own heart. His conscience will be eased, and his ruin will be prevented (1 John 1:9; Jeremiah 3:12-13). When we put sin before our own eyes, like David saying, “My sin is always before me,” God puts it behind his back.
