Proverbs 24:10

menu_book Verse in Context

8 One who plots to do evil will be called a schemer.

9 The schemes of folly are sin. The mocker is detested by men.

10 If you falter in the time of trouble, your strength is small.

11 Rescue those who are being led away to death! Indeed, hold back those who are staggering to the slaughter!

12 If you say, “Behold, we didn’t know this,” doesn’t he who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, doesn’t he know it? Shall he not give to every man according to his work?

auto_stories Bible Guided Commentary

Note, first, that in the day of trouble we are quick to lose heart, grow weary, and give in to discouragement. Then our spirits sink, our hands drop, our knees weaken, and we feel unable to do anything. Often the very people who are most cheerful when all is well are the ones who become most downcast when something goes wrong.

Second, this shows that our strength is small, and it also makes us weaker still. It is a sign that you do not have much steady resolve, clear thought, or faith, for faith is the strength of the soul, if you cannot bear an upsetting change in your life. Some people are so weak that they can stand almost nothing, and if trouble only touches them, or even only threatens them, they faint at once and almost give up hope (Job 4:5). By doing that, they make themselves less able to face the trouble and less able to help themselves. So be brave, and God will strengthen your heart.
