Pride is a sign that ruin is near, and ruin will at last be the result of pride. Often, before destruction comes, people are allowed by God’s just judgment to become even more proud. That makes their fall more severe and more shocking. Even when that does not happen in every case, this warning still stands: when a person’s heart is lifted up with pride, a fall follows (Proverbs 16:18).
Humility is a sign that honor is near, and it prepares a person for honor. In the end, honor will be the reward of humility, as was said earlier (Proverbs 15:33). This truth needs to be repeated often, because people are so unwilling to believe it.
