Here is, first, God’s complete sufficiency for his people. His name is a strong tower for them. In that tower they can rest when they are weary, and find shelter when they are chased. There they are lifted above their enemies and protected against them. There is enough in God, and in the ways he has made himself known to us, to keep us at peace at all times.
The riches stored in this tower are enough to make believers truly rich. They are a steady feast and a lasting treasure. Its strength is enough to guard them. The name of the Lord means all that he has shown himself to be as God, and as our God. This includes not only his titles and qualities, but also his covenant, his promise of a binding relationship with his people, and every promise that belongs to it. All of this makes a tower, a strong tower, one that cannot be broken into or overcome, for all God’s people.
Second, this shows the saints’ safety in God. The tower is strong for those who know how to use it as a tower. The righteous, by faith and prayer, by worship and dependence on God, run into it like a city of refuge. Once they have made sure their share in God’s name, they take comfort and benefit from it.
They step out of themselves, withdraw from the world, and live above it. They dwell in God, and God dwells in them. So they are safe, they know they are safe, and they will find that they are safe.
