The scope of this chapter is much like the scope of chapter 17. It foretells and mourns the ruin of the house of David, the royal line of Judah, in the tragic fall of Josiah’s four sons and grandsons, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jeconiah, and Zedekiah. In them, that famous line of kings was cut off, and the prophet is told to lament it (Ezekiel 19:1).
He does this through two pictures. First, the kingdom of Judah and the house of David are compared to a lioness, and those princes are compared to lions, fierce and hungry, yet hunted down and caught in nets (Ezekiel 19:2-9). Second, that kingdom and that house are compared to a vine, and those princes to branches that had once been strong and fruitful, but were now broken off and burned (Ezekiel 19:10-14).
This ruin of the monarchy was already taking place, and this lament was meant to move the people deeply. They should not comfort themselves with empty hopes that their peace would last forever.
