Zephaniah 1:14 - Meaning and Application

Nothing could be said with more force and life, or in words better suited to wake up a safe and careless people, than this warning to Judah and Jerusalem about the coming destruction by the Chaldeans. It was enough to make the sinners in Zion tremble that this was the day of the Lord, the day when he would show himself by taking vengeance on them. It was the great day of the Lord, a preview of the day of judgment, almost like a small picture of the last judgment, just as our Savior spoke of Jerusalem’s later destruction by the Romans in (Matthew 24:27).

This day of the Lord is described as very near. The vision was not for a far-off time, as people think when they push the evil day away from themselves. Those deceive themselves who treat it as distant, for it is near, it is near, it comes quickly. The prophet sounds the alarm like someone truly urgent, like a person waking a house with the cry, "Fire! Fire!" when the danger is next door. It is as if he says, "It is near, it is near, so it is time to act for your safety before it is too late." It is foolish for those to sleep when their judgment does not sleep, and to linger when it is already hurrying toward them.

It is also described as a very dreadful day. Even the sound of it, as it comes near, will be so terrifying that the mighty men will cry out bitterly, crying in fear like children. Just hearing the report of it will be a torment. In the final great day of the Lord, mighty men will cry to the rocks and mountains to hide them, but they will not help. The prophet speaks strongly of this coming day in (Zephaniah 1:15): it is a day of wrath, God’s wrath in full strength, wrath to the utmost. It will be a day of trouble and distress for sinners, when they will be in agony and see no way to help themselves. The misery of the lost is summed up in the anger and wrath of God, which cause it, and the trouble and anguish of the sinner’s soul, which follow from it (Romans 2:8-9). It will be a day of trouble and distress for the people in the land, and a day of ruin and desolation for the whole land. That fruitful land will be turned into a wilderness. It will be a day of darkness and gloom, with nothing cheerful anywhere and no smallest sign of hope. Look around, and all is black. It is a day of clouds and thick darkness, with nothing encouraging and everything threatening. The heavy clouds are full of storms and tempests.

It is also a destroying day, as (Zephaniah 1:16-17) says. It will bring ruin to places, even the strongest and best defended ones. It is a day of trumpet blast and alarm against the fortified cities, to break into them, and against the high towers, to bring them down. What fort or wall can stand against the wrath of God? It will also bring ruin to people. The Lord says, "I will bring distress on men," even the strongest and bravest of them. Their hearts and hands will fail them. They will walk like blind men, wandering without end, because they have sinned against the Lord. Those who live as wicked people will justly be left to live as blind people, always in darkness, danger, and uncertainty, without guidance or comfort, and at last falling into the ditch. Because they have sinned against the Lord, he will hand them over to cruel enemies, who will pour out their blood like dust, with no more regret than that, and their flesh will be thrown like dung on a refuse heap.

The destruction of that day will be unavoidable and total, as (Zephaniah 1:18) says. There will be no escape by ransom. Neither their silver nor their gold, which they had piled up so greedily for the evil day, or spent so carelessly to make friends for such a time, will be able to save them in the day of the Lord’s wrath. Another prophet uses these same words for the same event (Ezekiel 7:19). Riches do not help in the day of wrath (Proverbs 11:4). In fact, riches can bring people under the anger of men (Ecclesiastes 5:13), and riches used wrongly bring God’s anger too.

There will also be no escape by flight or hiding, because the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy, and then where could any hiding place be found? This shows the power of God’s jealous anger, which can devour whole lands. How then could any single person stand before it? He will make a complete and speedy end of all who live in the land, like a farmer who clears his field by cutting up every briar and thorn for the fire. Sometimes God’s judgments make a quick and total end of sinful nations. Their ruin is finished in a short time. Let sinners not be lulled to sleep by God’s patience, because when their sin is full, his justice will catch them and overpower them, and he will do his work quickly and thoroughly.
