Psalms 136:23 - Meaning and Application

God’s everlasting mercy is celebrated here in the redemption of his church (Psalm 136:23, 24). Through many rescues of the Jewish people from their enemies, God remembered them in their low years and raised up saviors, such as the judges and later David, who gave them rest from all their enemies. But these earlier rescues pointed forward to the great redemption of the whole church. So we have good reason to say, “He remembered us, the children of men, in our low and lost condition, for his mercy endures forever. He sent his Son to redeem us from sin, death, hell, and every spiritual enemy, for his mercy endures forever. He chose to send him to redeem us, not the angels who sinned, for his mercy endures forever.”

God’s mercy is also seen in the way he provides for every living thing (Psalm 136:25). Wherever he gives life, he also gives food that fits and sustains that life. This is a kind act of his care, and he shows himself to be a wise and generous provider for such a great family.

Finally, God’s mercy is seen in all his glory and all his gifts (Psalm 136:26). “Give thanks to the God of heaven” points us to a glorious God, and we should notice the honor of his mercy in our praise. The greatness of his glory is shown in the people who receive his mercy (Romans 9:23). It also reminds us that he is the great giver, since every good and perfect gift comes from above, from the Father of lights, the God of heaven. We should trace every stream back to its source. This mercy or that mercy may last only for a time, but the mercy that is in God lasts forever. It is an endless fountain.
