Proverbs 29:8 - Meaning and Application

Here we see, first, who are dangerous to the public: scornful men. When such men are put into public work, they act too quickly, because they despise careful thought and will not spend time considering or consulting. They do what is unlawful and wrong, because they scorn being held back by laws and rules. They break promises, because they think they are above their word, and they stir up the people, because they do not care to win their approval.

In this way, they bring a city into danger by their bad conduct, or, as the margin reads, they set a city on fire. They spread unrest among the citizens and throw everything into confusion. These are the men who mock religion, the claims of conscience, the fear of the life to come, and everything sacred and serious. Such men are a plague to their generation. They bring God's judgments on a land, set people against one another, and leave everything in disorder.

Second, we see who are a blessing to a land: wise men. By encouraging religion, which is true wisdom, they turn away God's anger. By giving careful counsel, they bring feuding parties together and keep divisions from causing harm. Proud and foolish men light the fires that wise and good men must put out.
