Proverbs 29:27 - Meaning and Application

This shows not only the natural opposition between virtue and vice, like light and darkness or fire and water, but also the old enmity that has always existed between the seed of the woman and the seed of the serpent (Genesis 3:15).

All who are made holy have a deep dislike for wickedness and for wicked people. They care for the souls of all, because God does, and he does not want anyone to perish. But they hate the ways and practices of those who dishonor God and harm other people. They cannot hear about such things or speak of them without a holy anger. They are disgusted by the company of the ungodly and unjust, and they fear giving such people any support. Instead, they do all they can to bring wickedness to an end. So an unjust man makes himself hateful to the righteous, and part of his shame and punishment right now is that good people cannot bear him.

In the same way, all who are not made holy have a deep dislike for godliness and godly people. The one who is upright in his conduct, who is careful about what he says and does, is an abomination to the wicked. His upright life may restrain their sin, or at least put it to shame and expose it. Cain did this, who followed his father the devil. This is not only the wickedness of the wicked, that they hate those whom God loves, but also their misery. They hate those whom they will soon see in everlasting joy and honor, and who will rule over them in the morning (Psalm 49:14).
