Here we see, first, the boldness and shamelessness of a wicked person. He hardens his face, in other words, he steels himself so he will not blush, and braves his sin so he will not tremble when he does great wrong. He defies the warnings of the law, the rebukes of his own conscience, the correction of God’s word, and the lessons of God’s providence. He insists on having his own way, and nothing will stop him (Isaiah 57:17).
We also see the care and caution of a good person. The upright does not say, “What do I want? What would please me? And I will have it.” Instead, he asks, “What should I do? What does God require? What is right? What is wise? What will build others up?” So he does not force his own path. He chooses his way by a safe and sure rule.
