The great honor of the land of Israel was that it was Emmanuel’s land, the land of God with us (Isaiah 8:8). It was not only the place where Christ was born, but also where he preached and worked his miracles. In his time, the land was divided into three parts, Judea in the south, Galilee in the north, and Samaria between them.
In this chapter, we see Christ in all three regions of that land. He leaves Judea (John 4:1-3). He passes through Samaria, and though this was only a brief stop, most of the chapter is about it. There we see his coming into Samaria (John 4:4-6), his conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:7-26), the woman’s report about him to the town (John 4:27-30), Christ’s conversation with his disciples in the meantime (John 4:31-38), and the good result among the Samaritans (John 4:39-42).
Then we find him staying for a time in Galilee (John 4:43-46), and healing a nobleman’s son there, who was close to death (John 4:46-54).
