After speaking of the secure protection of the righteous man in Proverbs 18:10, Solomon now shows the false and misleading security of a rich man whose share and treasure are in this world, and who sets his heart on them. His wealth is his confidence, and he expects from it what a godly person expects from God.

Notice, first, how he supports himself. He treats his wealth as his city, the place where he lives and rules, with great self-satisfaction, as if he had an entire city under his command. It is his strong city, where he hides himself and then challenges danger, as if nothing could harm him. His pride is like scales, and his wealth is like a wall that surrounds him. He thinks it is a high wall that no one can climb over (Job 31:24; Revelation 18:7).

Notice, second, how he deceives himself in this. It is a strong city and a high wall only in his own mind. It will not actually prove to be so. It is like the house built on sand, which fails the builder when he needs it most.
