It is a very good thing to have our minds steady, not tossed around by troubling worries and fears. We should be able to keep walking in a calm, honest, and godly way, not thrown off by any event or change. Then we can trust that everything will work for good and end well, and so remain quiet and settled.
The only way to have that kind of steady mind is to commit our work to the Lord. The great matters of our souls must be handed over to the grace of God, trusting it and submitting to its guidance (Titus 1:2). All our outward concerns must also be given to God’s providence, his wise, powerful, and good ordering of all things. “Roll your works on the Lord” is the idea. Roll the weight of your care off yourself and onto God.
Bring the matter before him in prayer. “Make your works known to the Lord,” as some translate it, meaning not only the work of your hands, but also the thoughts and movements of your heart. Then leave it with him in faith, trust, and surrender. Let the Lord’s will be done. We can be at peace when we decide that whatever pleases God will also please us.

Proverbs 16:3 invites us to a profound relationship with God where our actions and inner thoughts are aligned under His guidance. The Hebrew term translated as "commit" or "roll" suggests a complete and active surrender of our endeavors to the Lord. This implies not merely a passive handover, but a deliberate and trusting action, akin to rolling a burden off our shoulders onto one who can bear it. In the context of ancient Israel, this proverb would resonate with an audience familiar with the concept of dependence on God for wisdom and success. By committing our works to the LORD, we acknowledge His sovereignty and wisdom, recognizing that His plans transcend our limited understanding. The promise attached to this action is that our "thoughts shall be established." This speaks to a divine alignment where our plans and intentions become firm and secure, grounded in the reality of God's will. Practically, this encourages us to start our endeavors with prayerful dedication, seeking divine alignment, and trusting that when we place our trust in Him, our paths will be firmly set. This call to dedication and trust remains a timeless principle for ensuring our lives are centered in divine purpose.

Proverbs 16:3 is a guiding principle for anyone striving to balance ambition with faith. When it says, "Commit thy works unto the LORD," think of it as rolling the weight of your tasks, goals, and plans onto a stable foundation. It's like building a house on rock instead of sand. This commitment isn't just a verbal pledge—it's about aligning your daily actions and decisions with divine principles. Start by integrating your work with purpose-driven values. Are your tasks reflecting integrity and ethical standards? These are non-negotiables. Next, consider your intentions. Are they self-serving, or do they aim to benefit others as well? True commitment involves seeking outcomes beyond just personal gain. Now, for the second part: "thy thoughts shall be established." When your actions align with a higher purpose, clarity follows. Your thoughts become organized, focused, and less cluttered with doubt or indecision. This leads to more effective decisions and a calmer approach to challenges. So, take a step today. Review one task or goal. Commit it sincerely to principles that transcend immediate desires, and watch as your mental landscape becomes more clear and purposeful. This is about creating a life where work and faith walk hand in hand.

Restorative Health Application
Proverbs 16:3 encourages us to "commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established." This verse can serve as a profound guide for managing anxiety and fostering emotional wellness. In clinical terms, anxiety often stems from a perceived lack of control and overwhelming stressors. By "rolling" or entrusting our endeavors and daily tasks to a higher power, we can reduce the cognitive load that contributes to anxiety.
From a psychological perspective, this aligns with the practice of cognitive restructuring, where individuals are encouraged to reframe their thoughts and relinquish undue control over uncontrollable circumstances. By practicing this form of cognitive flexibility, we can alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, leading to more established and stable thought patterns.
A practical coping strategy is to begin each day with a mindfulness exercise, focusing on setting intentions and recognizing areas within your control. Consciously acknowledge the areas you are surrendering to divine guidance. This practice not only aligns with the biblical wisdom of committing your works but also cultivates a sense of peace and clarity, promoting a healthier mental state. By integrating these practices, individuals can find a balanced approach to handling life's challenges, enhancing both their psychological resilience and spiritual growth.
Common Misapplications to Avoid
A common misinterpretation of Proverbs 16:3 is the belief that committing one's plans to God will guarantee success, potentially leading to feelings of failure or spiritual inadequacy if things do not go as hoped. This can discourage seeking professional help, as individuals may feel their faith is solely responsible for their mental health. It's important to recognize when mental health support is necessary, such as persistent feelings of depression, anxiety, or hopelessness. Relying solely on prayer or spiritual practices without addressing underlying mental health issues can perpetuate toxic positivity or spiritual bypassing, where genuine emotions are dismissed in favor of a superficial sense of well-being. Always prioritize comprehensive care, combining spiritual beliefs with professional guidance. Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not a lack of faith.
