Numbers 9:15 - Meaning and Application

We have here the story of the cloud, not a natural history of clouds. Who can explain the movement of clouds? This is a divine account of a cloud appointed to be the visible sign of God’s presence with Israel.

When the tabernacle was finished, this cloud, which had been hanging above their camp, settled on the tabernacle and covered it. This showed that God makes his presence known with his people in and through his appointed ways of worship. There he reveals himself, and there we must look if we want to see the beauty of the Lord (Psalm 27:4; Ezekiel 37:26, 37:27). In this way, God honored his own appointments and showed that he accepted his people’s love and obedience.

What appeared as a cloud by day appeared as fire at night. If it had been only a cloud, it would not have been visible at night. If it had been only fire, it would have been hard to notice during the day. But God wanted clear signs that his presence with them was steady, and that he cared for them day and night, keeping them always (Isaiah 27:3; Psalm 121:6). This also teaches us to keep God always before us and to remember that he is near both day and night. It may also point to the nature of that old covenant revelation, which had darkness in the cloud and fear in the fire, compared with the clearer and more comforting glory God has now shown in Jesus Christ.

This pillar of cloud and fire directed all Israel’s movements, marches, and camps in the wilderness. As long as the cloud stayed on the tabernacle, they stayed in the same place and did not move. No doubt they often wanted to press ahead toward Canaan, where they longed to go and hoped to arrive quickly. Yet if the cloud rested there for a month or even a year, they rested there too (Numbers 9:22). Those who believe do not need to rush. No time is wasted while we wait for God’s time. It is just as true obedience to sit quietly when God appoints us to wait as it is to work when he calls us to work.

When the cloud was lifted, they moved on, no matter how comfortable their camp had been (Numbers 9:17). Whether it moved by day or by night, they did not delay in following it (Numbers 9:21). Likely some people were set as watchmen day and night, keeping an eye on the cloud and warning the camp when it began to rise. This was called keeping the charge of the Lord. Because they never knew when the cloud would move or when they would be told to stop, they had to stay ready at all times. In the same way, we do not know when we will leave this earthly body, so we should always be ready to move at the Lord’s command.

As far and as long as the cloud moved, they marched. Wherever it stopped, they set up their tents around it, and God’s tent was beneath it (Numbers 9:17). It is painful to stay when God has left, but it is safe and good to go when we see God leading us, and to rest where he tells us to rest. This is repeated again and again because it was a constant miracle, often repeated, and never failed throughout their travels. It is also something we should notice carefully, because it is so full of meaning. David later mentions it (Psalm 105:39), and God’s people after the exile remember it too (Nehemiah 9:19). The cloud’s guidance also points to the guidance of the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 63:14). The Spirit of the Lord gave them rest, and so God led his people.

This teaches us, first, how carefully God looks after his people. Nothing could show God’s tenderness toward Israel more clearly than the guidance of this cloud. It led them the right way (Psalm 107:7) and moved at their pace, as if God were covering them with his wings. We should not expect such visible signs of God’s presence and guidance now, but the promise still stands for all God’s true people. He will guide them by his counsel (Psalm 73:24), even to the end (Psalm 48:14). All God’s children are led by the Spirit of God (Romans 8:14), and he directs the paths of those who trust him in all their ways (Proverbs 3:6). God’s special care is at work in all their affairs, guiding and overruling them for good. The steps of a good person are ordered by the Lord (Psalm 37:23).

Second, this teaches us the proper attitude we should have toward God in all our ways. In our desires and actions, we must follow the direction of his word and Spirit. Every movement of the soul should be guided by God’s will. At the Lord’s command, our hearts should move and rest. In all our affairs, we should follow providence, accept all that God orders, and learn contentment in every condition. Israel, with the cloud as their guide, was spared the trouble of planning every move, arguing over decisions, or sending scouts ahead to learn the land, or men to clear the way, or officers to mark out the camp. The pillar of cloud did all this for them. In the same way, those who trust God and commit their work to him may rest easy about the outcome, though they still use the right means wisely.
