We find Ahaziah, Ahab’s true son and successor, on the throne of Israel. His reign lasted less than two years. He died after falling in his own house, and after the mention of Moab’s revolt (2 Kings 1:1), this chapter tells the rest of the story.
1. We first see the message Ahaziah sent, on that occasion, to the god of Ekron, asking for help (2 Kings 1:2).
2. Next comes the message he received from the God of Israel (2 Kings 1:3-8).
3. Then we read about the destruction of the messengers he sent to seize the prophet, first one group and then another (2 Kings 1:9-12).
4. After that, the third messenger humbles himself. The prophet shows him mercy, and he carries the message to the king himself (2 Kings 1:13-16).
5. Finally, we are told of Ahaziah’s death (2 Kings 1:17-18).
In this account, we see how great the prophet appears and how small the prince really is.
