Never, surely, did any kingdom change its king for the worse more than Judah did when Jehoram, one of the worst rulers, followed Jehoshaphat, one of the best. This was part of Judah’s punishment for not making better use of Jehoshaphat’s good rule, and for being at least cold toward his reforms (2 Chronicles 20:33). People who did not learn to value a good king were rightly troubled by receiving a bad one.
This chapter shows several things. 1. Jehoram’s rise to the throne (2 Chronicles 21:1-3). 2. The wicked way he secured his rule by murdering his brothers (2 Chronicles 21:4). 3. The idol worship and other sins he committed (2 Chronicles 21:5, 2 Chronicles 21:6, 2 Chronicles 21:11). 4. Elijah’s prophecy against him, Elijah being the prophet who confronted Israel’s sins (2 Chronicles 21:12-15). 5. God’s judgments on him, shown in his subjects turning away from him (2 Chronicles 21:8-10) and his enemies defeating him (2 Chronicles 21:16-17). 6. His painful sickness and dishonorable death (2 Chronicles 21:18-20). 7. The preservation of the house of David, which means David’s royal line was kept alive anyway (2 Chronicles 21:7).
