42 Of the children of Naphtali, throughout their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;
43 Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.
44 These are those that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: each one was for the house of his fathers.
45 So were all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel;

Here we have the final total at the foot of the account: 600,000 fighting men, plus 3,550. Some think that, when the earlier count was made a few months before (Exodus 38:26), the Levites were included with the rest. Now that tribe was set apart for God’s service, but by this time enough others had reached age twenty to keep the number the same.
This shows that whatever we give up for God’s honor and service will surely be made up to us in some way. We can also see what a huge group they were. Think about how much it took to sustain all these people, apart from the women, children, sick, elderly, and the mixed crowd, for forty years in the wilderness. God supplied them every day, giving them food from heaven’s dew instead of the earth’s produce. What a great and generous provider our God is, with so many depending on him and receiving from him each day.
This also shows how much damage sin does to a people. Within forty years, most of them would have died anyway because all people die through Adam’s sin, since death came into the world when sin entered it. But because of their particular sins of unbelief and complaining, all those numbered here, except two, laid their bones in the wilderness under the judgment of their own wrongdoing.
It also points us forward to the great number God’s spiritual Israel will one day become. At one time, and in one place, they may seem like only a little flock. Yet when they all come together, they will be a great crowd that no one can count (Revelation 7:9). Even if the church starts small, it will grow greatly in the end. A little one will become a thousand.
