The priest is here told how to judge if there is any sign of leprosy, whether it appears in an old ulcer or sore that had healed, (Leviticus 13:18). When old sores that seemed cured break out again, there is reason to fear leprosy is present. So it is with those who have escaped the corrupt ways of the world, and then become trapped by them again and overpowered.
Or it may appear in a burn from an accident, which seems to be the meaning here, (Leviticus 13:24). The burning heat of strife and conflict often brings out the corruption that shows people to be unclean. Or it may appear in a scall on the head. In this case, the judgment often came down to a very small detail. If the hair in the scall was black, it showed soundness. If it was yellow, that pointed to leprosy, (Leviticus 13:30-37). The other rules in these cases are the same as those already given.
When we read about these different ailments, it is good to do two things. First, we should grieve over the sad condition of human life, which is exposed to so many troubles. We are surrounded by many kinds of sickness, and all of them came in through sin. Second, we should thank God if he has never afflicted us with any of these sores. If our bodies are healthy and strong, we are bound to honor God with our bodies.
