If we compare this chapter with the close of the last one, we see a sharp contrast between the comforting promises here and the fearful warnings there. We may, with the apostle, “behold the goodness and severity of God” toward the Jewish church, which fell, and toward the Christian church, which rose on its ruins (Romans 11:22). There was severity when Zion was plowed like a field, but great goodness for the church that would be built after it.
This chapter promises several things. It says the church will be advanced and enlarged by the bringing in of the nations to it (Micah 4:1, Micah 4:2). It will be protected in quietness and peace (Micah 4:3, Micah 4:4). It will be kept close to God, steady, and faithful to him (Micah 4:5).
It also shows that, under Christ’s rule, all its wrongs will be set right (Micah 4:6, Micah 4:7). It will have a wide and flourishing rule (Micah 4:8). Its troubles will at last end in joy (Micah 4:9, Micah 4:10). And its enemies will be troubled, and even destroyed by their own attacks against it (Micah 4:11-13).
