The inspired writer begins the book of Acts with a reference back to his Gospel, a brief summary of Christ’s life, which he also addressed to his friend Theophilus (Acts 1:1-2). He then gives a short account of the proofs of Christ’s resurrection, his conversations with the disciples, and the instructions he gave them during the forty days he remained on earth after rising from the dead (Acts 1:3-5).
Next, he tells the story of Christ’s ascension into heaven, including the conversation the disciples had with him before he ascended, and the words the angels spoke to them after he was taken up (Acts 1:6-11). He also gives a broad view of the early Christian church, still in its beginning stage, and its condition from Christ’s ascension until the Holy Spirit was poured out (Acts 1:12-14).
Finally, he gives a detailed account of how the gap left in the apostolic group by Judas’ death was filled, when Matthias was chosen in his place (Acts 1:15-26).
