When our Lord Jesus called his apostles to serve and suffer for him, he told them that the last would be first, and the first last. That was clearly seen in Stephen and Paul, both of whom came to faith later than the apostles, yet were ahead of them in service and suffering. God often gives honors and gifts in a way that crosses human expectations.
This chapter gives us the death of Stephen, the first martyr of the Christian church, who went before the rest of the noble army of faithful witnesses. His suffering and death are told in more detail than those of any other early believer, because they were meant to guide and encourage all who are called to resist even to the point of bloodshed, as he did.
1. Stephen first defends himself before the council against the charges brought against him. His main point is that it was no blasphemy against God, and no insult to his glory, to say that the temple would be destroyed and the customs of the ceremonial law, that is, the outward worship laws given to Israel, would change. He proves this by going through the history of the Old Testament and showing that God never meant to limit his favor to one place or to that ceremonial law. He also shows that the Jews had often been a stubborn and provoking people, and had already lost any right to expect special privileges in that form. In fact, the holy place and the law were only pictures of better things to come, so it was no dishonor to them to say that they must give way to what was better.
2. He then turns this history against the men prosecuting him and judging him. He sharply reproves them for their evil, by which they had brought ruin on their nation and their place, and yet could not bear to hear the truth about it.
3. Finally, the chapter tells how they put Stephen to death by stoning him, and how he met it with patience, joy, and godly submission.
