Asher’s land lay along the coast of the great sea. We do not read of any famous person from this tribe, except Anna the prophetess, who lived in the temple when our Savior was born (Luke 2:36). There were not many famous places in Asher either.
Aphek, mentioned later (Joshua 19:30), was near the place where Ben-hadad was defeated by Ahab (1 Kings 20:30). Nearby were the well-known seaports of Tyre and Sidon, cities that appear often in Scripture. Tyre is called here that strong city (Joshua 19:29), but Bishop Patrick thinks this was not the same Tyre mentioned later, because the later city was built on an island, while this older strong city was on the mainland.
Some have thought that many of the Canaanites fled into these two strong places, Sidon and Tyre, and took shelter there when Joshua came against them.
