The land given to Issachar stretched from the Jordan River in the east to the Great Sea in the west, with Manasseh to the south and Zebulun to the north. Issachar was a large tribe (Numbers 26:25). Tola, one of Israel’s judges, came from this tribe (Judges 10:1), and so did Baasha, one of Israel’s kings (1 Kings 15:27).

The chief places in this territory were these. Jezreel was there, and Ahab’s palace stood in it, with Naboth’s vineyard nearby. Shunem was another important place, home to the good woman who welcomed Elisha. The river Kishon ran through this area, and on its banks Sisera was defeated by Deborah and Barak.

Also in Issachar were the mountains of Gilboa, where Saul and Jonathan died. These mountains were not far from Endor, where Saul consulted the witch. The valley of Megiddo was there too, where Josiah was killed near Hadad-rimmon (2 Kings 23:29; Zechariah 12:11).
