This chapter brings Absalom’s rebellion, and Absalom’s life, to an end. It clears the way for David to return to his throne, and the next chapter brings him back in peace and victory.
Here we have David’s preparations for battle against the rebels (2 Samuel 18:1-5). We then see Absalom’s forces completely defeated and scattered (2 Samuel 18:6-8). After that comes Absalom’s death and burial (2 Samuel 18:9-18). The chapter also tells how the news was brought to David, who stayed at Mahanaim, a city in Gilead where he had taken shelter (2 Samuel 18:19-32). Finally, it records David’s deep grief for Absalom (2 Samuel 18:33).
