The conflict between David and Absalom is now moving quickly toward a crisis. It must be settled by the sword, and this chapter shows the preparations for that. Absalom, David’s rebellious son, calls a war council. Ahithophel urges speed and an immediate attack (2 Samuel 17:1-4), but Hushai advises caution and delay (2 Samuel 17:5-13). Absalom accepts Hushai’s advice (2 Samuel 17:14), and Ahithophel, bitterly disappointed, hangs himself (2 Samuel 17:23).
Secret news is then sent to David, though with great difficulty, about what has been decided (2 Samuel 17:15-21). David crosses over to the other side of the Jordan River (2 Samuel 17:22-24), and there his camp is supplied with food by friends from that region (2 Samuel 17:27-29). Absalom and his men also march after him into Gilead, east of the Jordan (2 Samuel 17:25-26).
In the next chapter, the matter will be settled in battle. So far, everything has seemed dark for poor David, but now the first light of his rescue begins to appear.
