At the close of the previous chapter, we left David fleeing from Jerusalem and Absalom entering it. In this chapter, we follow David in his sad escape. There we see him deceived by Ziba (2 Samuel 16:1-4), and cursed by Shimei, which he bears with remarkable patience (2 Samuel 16:5-14).
We then meet Absalom in his proud entrance into the city. There we find him deceived by Hushai (2 Samuel 16:15-19), and then advised by Ahithophel to sleep with his father’s concubines, the women who belonged to the king’s household (2 Samuel 16:20-23).
