In this chapter, the apostle first rebukes the Galatians for their foolishness in letting themselves be led away from the faith of the gospel. He uses several reasons to make them feel how serious their mistake was.
Then he defends the teaching he had already argued for, that people are made right with God by faith, not by obeying the law. He supports this in four ways. He points to Abraham’s example, to the nature and purpose of the law, to the clear witness of the Old Testament, and to the lasting promise God made with Abraham.
Someone might then ask, “Why was the law given at all?” Paul answers that it was added because of sins. It was meant to show the world its need for a Savior. It also served as a tutor, or guardian, to lead us to Christ.
The chapter ends by showing the great privilege believers have under the gospel.
