But thou shalt say unto them, This is a nation that obeyeth not the voice of the LORD their God, nor receiveth correction: truth is perished, and is cut off from their mouth.

In this chapter, we have:
1. Our Lord Jesus heals a man with dropsy on the Sabbath and defends his action against those who objected to it (Luke 14:1-6).
2. He gives a lesson in humility to those who wanted the best seats at the table (Luke 14:7-11).
3. He teaches charity to those who invited the rich to their feasts but did not care for the poor (Luke 14:12-14).
4. He speaks a parable about invited guests at a feast, showing the success of the gospel, the rejection of the Jews and all others who set their hearts on this world, and the welcome given to the Gentiles and to all who come to be satisfied with Christ (Luke 14:15-24).
5. He lays down the great rule of discipleship, warning all who would follow him to count the cost carefully, and especially warning ministers to keep their spiritual saltiness, that is, their usefulness and purity in service (Luke 14:25-35).
