Our Lord Jesus went down into death in glory, even though his enemies did all they could to make his death shameful. But he rose again with even greater glory, and this chapter tells us about that. Luke gives us a fuller account than Matthew and Mark of the proofs and signs that Christ truly rose from the dead.
1. Two angels give assurance to the women who came to the tomb, telling them that the Lord Jesus had risen, just as he had said he would. They point the women back to his own words (Luke 24:1-7). Then the women report this to the apostles (Luke 24:8-11).
2. Peter goes to the tomb and sees what is there for himself (Luke 24:12).
3. Christ speaks with the two disciples on the road to Emmaus and makes himself known to them (Luke 24:13-35).
4. He appears to the eleven disciples themselves later that same evening (Luke 24:36-49).
5. He says farewell to them, ascends into heaven, and leaves his disciples full of joy and praise (Luke 24:50-53).
