We have here the first alphabet of this lament, made up of twenty-two stanzas. In it, the sorrows of Jerusalem are deeply mourned, and her terrible present condition is made even worse by comparison with her former prosperity. Throughout the chapter, sin is confessed and lamented as the cause of all these troubles. God is appealed to for justice against their enemies, and for mercy toward his people.
The chapter is one connected whole, with its complaints woven together. Still, it may be seen in three parts:
1. A complaint to God about their troubles, with a request for his compassionate attention (Lamentations 1:1-11).
2. The same complaint made to their friends, with a request for their pity (Lamentations 1:12-17).
3. An appeal to God and his righteousness about the matter (Lamentations 1:18-22), where he is shown to be right in their suffering and is humbly asked to show himself right in their rescue.
