Now that the kingdom has split into Judah and Israel, the books of Kings will from here on follow their separate histories. We must watch the line of each king and the affairs of each kingdom as distinct matters.
In this chapter, we first see the prophecy that Jeroboam's family will be destroyed (1 Kings 14:7-16). His child’s sickness becomes the setting for that message (1 Kings 14:1-6), and the child’s death gives a first sign of what is coming (1 Kings 14:17-18). The chapter also closes with the end of Jeroboam’s reign (1 Kings 14:19-20).
Second, we read about the decline and weakening of Rehoboam’s family and kingdom (1 Kings 14:21-28), and then the end of his reign (1 Kings 14:29-31). In both accounts, we can see the harmful results of sin and the troubles it brings on nations and families.
