The building and furnishings of the temple were very glorious, but its dedication was even more glorious. Prayer and praise, the work of God’s people, are greater than casting metal or carving stone, the work of skilled craftsmen. The temple was meant to keep up the fellowship between God and his people, and here we see the account of their first solemn meeting there.
1. The representatives of all Israel were called together (1 Kings 8:1-2), to hold a feast in honor of God for fourteen days (1 Kings 8:65).
2. The priests brought the ark into the Most Holy Place and set it there (1 Kings 8:3-9).
3. God showed his presence there with a cloud (1 Kings 8:10-11).
4. Solomon, with thankful words to God, told the people why they had come together (1 Kings 8:12-21).
5. In a long prayer, he asked God to kindly accept every prayer that would be made in or toward this place (1 Kings 8:22-53).
6. He sent the assembly away with a blessing and an exhortation, or earnest encouragement (1 Kings 8:54-61).
7. He offered many sacrifices. Then he and the people feasted on them, and they parted with great joy and satisfaction (1 Kings 8:62-66).
These were Israel’s golden days, days that pointed ahead to the days of the Son of Man, Jesus, in type.
