We saw an example of the wisdom God gave Solomon at the end of the previous chapter. Here we see the other part of God’s promise to him, his wealth and prosperity. This chapter describes the splendor of Solomon’s court, the officials who served him (1 Kings 4:1-6), and the men who supplied his household and managed their work (1 Kings 4:7-19, 27-28). It also tells us about the food on his table (1 Kings 4:22-23), the size of his kingdom (1 Kings 4:21-24), the number, safety, and peace of his people (1 Kings 4:20-25), his stables (1 Kings 4:26), and his great reputation for wisdom and learning (1 Kings 4:29-34).
Solomon was truly great, but the Lord Jesus was greater than he (Matthew 12:42). Jesus took the form of a servant, yet even in his lowest humbling, his divine greatness is far above royal greatness at its highest.
