In this chapter we see, first, David growing weaker and failing in health (1 Kings 1:1-4). Second, Adonijah, David’s son, sets himself up as king and holds a feast for his supporters to win their backing (1 Kings 1:5-10).
Third, Nathan the prophet and Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother, work together to secure the throne for Solomon, and they succeed in getting David to give the needed order (1 Kings 1:11-31). Fourth, Solomon is anointed as king, and the people rejoice at his rise (1 Kings 1:32-40).
Fifth, this puts a stop to Adonijah’s attempt to take the throne, and his followers scatter when they hear the news (1 Kings 1:41-49). Sixth, Solomon sends Adonijah away in peace, on condition that he prove himself loyal and well behaved (1 Kings 1:50-53).
