Here the apostle encourages believers against sins that come from weakness and failure (1 John 2:1-2). He then shows what it really means to know and love God, and he proves it by obedience (1 John 2:3-6). After that, he repeats the command to love one another, a duty that belongs to all Christians (1 John 2:7-11).
He also speaks to Christians at different stages of life and faith, giving each group suitable encouragement (1 John 2:12-14). He warns against loving the world, since the world and its desires pass away, but the one who does God’s will lives forever (1 John 2:15-17). Then he warns against deceivers and false teachers, who were already appearing in his day (1 John 2:18-19).
Finally, he shows the safety of true believers, because they have received the anointing, that is, the Spirit’s teaching and help, and so they can remain in the truth (1 John 2:20-27). He ends by urging them to continue in Christ, so that when he appears they will have confidence and not shrink back in shame at his coming (1 John 2:28-29).
