These angels were likely two of the three who had just been with Abraham, the two created angels sent to carry out God’s judgment on Sodom. Here we should notice a few things. There was only one good man in Sodom, and these heavenly messengers quickly found him. Wherever we are, we should look for the people in that place who fear God, and we should choose their company. Jesus gave a similar rule when he said to find out who is worthy and stay with them (Matthew 10:11). People from the same country often like to stay together when they are in a foreign land.
Lot, Abraham’s nephew, clearly stood apart from the rest of his neighbors, and that marked him out. A person who does not act like everyone else should not expect to be treated like everyone else. Lot sat in the gate of Sodom in the evening. While the others were likely drinking and wasting the night, he sat alone, waiting for a chance to do good. He was also very respectful to men whose appearance was serious and sober, even though they did not arrive with outward honor. He bowed to the ground when he met them, as if he sensed something divine in them at first sight.
Lot was also hospitable, generous, and eager to welcome strangers into his home. He urged these travelers to stay with him and to use the best lodging he had, giving every sign that he truly meant what he said. When the angels first declined, only to test him, their refusal did not make him less urgent. He pressed them strongly (Genesis 19:3), partly because he did not want them exposed to the danger and discomfort of sleeping in the street of Sodom, and partly because he wanted their company and conversation. He had not seen two such honest faces in Sodom for a long time.
People who live in wicked places should learn how much they should value the company of the wise and good, and should earnestly desire it. When the angels accepted Lot’s invitation, he treated them well and made a feast for them, feeling it was well spent on such guests. Good people should also be generous people, with wisdom and care.
