Here, the curtains of goat hair, spread over the tabernacle, and the coverings of rams’ skins and badgers’ skins above them, point to the shelter and special protection God gives his church (Exodus 36:14-19). God has prepared for his people a shade from the heat and a refuge from storm and rain (Isaiah 4:6). They are guarded against every kind of weather, so the sun and moon will not strike them, and they are also protected from the storms of God’s judgment, that hail which will sweep away the false shelter of lies (Isaiah 28:17). Those who live in God’s house will find that, however fierce the storm or however steady the rain outside, it does not rain in.
The boards and bars that supported the curtains point to the church’s strength and stability, even though it is only a tabernacle, or a temporary tent (Exodus 36:20-34). The boards were fitted together, and the bars ran through them to hold them firm. In the same way, the church’s unity and the willing agreement of those who support it greatly add to its strength and settle it.
