Before the tabernacle, there was to be a court, or open yard, surrounded by curtains made of the finest tent cloth. By the usual measure of cubits, this court was about fifty yards long and twenty-five yards wide. Pillars stood at regular distances, set in bronze bases, with silver bands and silver hooks for hanging the curtains. The curtain at the gate was finer than the others (Exodus 27:16).
This court was a picture of the church, set apart from the rest of the world. The fence around it showed that the church is distinct, and the pillars supported it, showing the church’s stability. The clean linen points to the righteousness of saints, that is, the right standing and holy life God gives his people (Revelation 19:8). These were the courts David longed for and wanted to live in (Psalm 84:2, Psalm 84:10), and the place where God’s people came with praise and thanks (Psalm 100:4). Yet this court would hold only a few worshipers.
Thanks be to God, under the gospel, that enclosure has been taken down. God’s will is that people pray everywhere, and there is room for all who call on the name of Jesus Christ.
