In this chapter, we see the first results of Saul’s rule, shown in the rescue of Jabesh-gilead from the Ammonites. Israel should not conclude from this that asking for a king was the right thing to do, because God could have saved them without a king. Instead, they should admire God’s kindness, because he did not cast them off when they cast him off. They should also see his wisdom in choosing the man he called to rule, who, if not already fit, was made fit for the task and helped to earn the crown by his public service before the people openly confirmed him as king.
1. The city of Jabesh-gilead, east of the Jordan, was brought into great danger by the Ammonites (1 Samuel 11:1-3).
2. Saul was quick to come to their aid, and in this he first made himself known as a leader (1 Samuel 11:4-10).
3. His attack succeeded, and in that success God made him known to the people (1 Samuel 11:11).
4. Even after this victory, Saul showed mercy to those who had opposed him (1 Samuel 11:12-13).
5. The chapter ends with the public confirmation and recognition of his rule (1 Samuel 11:14-15).
