Ecclesiastes 10:1 - Meaning and Application

In these verses, Solomon shows, first, how careful wise people must be not to fall into even a small amount of foolishness. Even a little folly is a serious stain on someone known for wisdom and honor. It harms a good name the way dead flies ruin a sweet perfume, not only spoiling its sweetness but also making it smell bad. True wisdom is true honor, and it gives a person a reputation that is like a box of precious ointment, pleasant and valuable.

But a reputation earned with hard work and wisdom can be lost very quickly. A little folly can do that because envy targets people who stand out. It notices their mistakes, magnifies them, and uses them against them. A fault that would barely be seen in someone else may be harshly judged in them. So those who make a strong claim to religion need to walk very carefully and avoid even the appearance of evil, and anything that leads toward it, because many eyes are on them and watch for them to stumble. Their name can be damaged quickly, and they have much more reputation to lose.

Second, Solomon shows how much advantage a wise person has over a fool in handling business. A wise person’s heart is at his right hand, which means he does his work skillfully and with readiness. He turns his hand to the task quickly, and he carries it through with speed and good sense. His counsel and courage are ready when he needs them. But a fool’s heart is at his left hand, meaning he is always unsure when he has important work to do. He goes at it awkwardly, like someone who is left-handed and unskilled, and he is soon at a loss and does not know what to do.

Third, Solomon shows how often fools reveal their own folly and expose themselves. If a person is foolish or morally corrupt, silly or wicked, and is left to himself even a little, he soon shows what he is. If he only walks along the road, his wisdom fails him, and through some mistake or improper act, he practically tells everyone he meets that he is a fool (Ecclesiastes 10:3). In other words, he makes his folly as plain as if he had said it out loud. He cannot hide it, and he is not ashamed of it. Sin always brings shame on sinners wherever they go.
