Observe here, first, that Moses taught the people everything God commanded him to teach, and nothing else, (Deuteronomy 6:1). In the same way, Christ’s ministers are to teach his churches all that he has commanded, neither adding to it nor taking away from it (Matthew 28:20).
Second, the purpose of their teaching was that the people would do what they had been taught (Matthew 28:19-20), keep God’s statutes (Deuteronomy 6:2), and carefully obey them (Deuteronomy 6:3). Good instruction from parents and ministers will only increase our guilt if we do not live by it.
Third, Moses worked to firmly establish them in God and true godliness as they were about to enter the land of Canaan. He wanted them ready for the blessings of that land and protected against its temptations. As they were starting out in the world, he wanted them to start well.
Fourth, the fear of God in the heart is the strongest reason for obedience: “that you may fear the Lord your God, to keep all his statutes” (Deuteronomy 6:2). When a person truly reveres God, that inward fear leads to a life of obedience.
Fifth, the passing on of religion in a family, or even in a nation, is the best inheritance. It is a great blessing when not only we ourselves, but also our children and our children’s children, fear the Lord.
Sixth, religion and right living help to promote and protect a people’s prosperity. Fear God, and it will go well with you. Those who are well taught, if they do what they are taught, will also be well provided for, as Israel was in the land flowing with milk and honey (Deuteronomy 6:3).
