In the chapter before this one, we read about Jerusalem in great distress. The city was under siege, mocked, threatened, and filled with fear, just about to be swallowed up by the Assyrian army. In this chapter, we see its glorious rescue, not by sword or bow, but through prayer, prophecy, and the hand of an angel.
1. Hezekiah, deeply troubled, sent to the prophet Isaiah and asked him to pray for him (2 Kings 19:1-5). Isaiah answered with a message of peace and comfort (2 Kings 19:6-7).
2. Sennacherib, king of Assyria, sent a letter to Hezekiah to frighten him into giving up (2 Kings 19:8-13).
3. Hezekiah then brought the matter before God in a very serious prayer. He asked the Lord, the righteous Judge, to help him (2 Kings 19:14-19).
4. God answered through Isaiah with a comforting message, promising deliverance (2 Kings 19:20-34).
5. The whole Assyrian army was destroyed by an angel, and Sennacherib himself was later killed by his own sons (2 Kings 19:35-37).
In all of this, God showed his glory and saved his people.
