This chapter tells us about the captivity of the ten tribes, and so it brings to an end the history of that kingdom. It had lasted about 265 years, beginning when Jeroboam son of Nebat set it up.
In this chapter we have three main parts. First, there is a brief account of this destruction (2 Kings 17:1-6). Second, there are comments on why it happened, meant to show that God was right to judge them and to warn others (2 Kings 17:7-23). Third, there is an account of the nations that later took their place in the land, along with the mixed religion they set up there (2 Kings 17:24-41).
