1 After these things I heard something like a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, “Hallelujah! Salvation, power, and glory belong to our God;

auto_stories Bible Guided Commentary

With Babylon’s fall now settled, finished, and declared beyond recovery in the previous chapter, this chapter begins with a holy celebration over her. It follows the command already given: “Rejoice over her, you heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets” (Revelation 18:20). Heaven now gladly answers that call.

First, we see the form of their thanksgiving. It is expressed in that great heavenly word, “Alleluia,” which means “Praise the Lord.” They begin with it, continue with it, and end with it (Revelation 19:4). Their prayers have now become praises, and their cries for help have turned into songs of praise.

Second, we see the reason for their thanksgiving. They praise God for the truth of his word and for the right way he has governed events, especially in this great act, the ruin of Babylon. Babylon had become a mother, nurse, and nest of idolatry, sexual sin, and cruelty (Revelation 19:2). For this clear display of divine justice, they give to God salvation, glory, honor, and power.

Third, we see the effect of these praises. When the angels and saints cried, “Alleluia,” Babylon’s fire burned more fiercely, and her smoke rose forever and ever (Revelation 19:3). The surest way to have our rescue continued and completed is to give God the glory for what he has already done. Praise for past mercy is one of the most effective prayers for more mercy to come. The praises of the saints stir up God’s wrath against the common enemy.

Fourth, we see the blessed harmony between angels and saints in this triumph song (Revelation 19:4). The churches and their ministers take up the same lovely sound from the angels and repeat it. Falling down and worshiping God, they answer, “Amen, Alleluia.”
