Here we have one of the most beautiful sights in this world, the Lord Jesus Christ at the head of his faithful followers and servants. We first see how Christ appears, as a Lamb standing on Mount Zion. Mount Zion means the gospel church. Christ is with his church, even in all her troubles, and because of his presence she is not destroyed. His presence is what keeps her steady and helps her endure.
He appears as a Lamb, a true Lamb, the Lamb of God. In the last chapter, a false lamb came up out of the earth, but it was really a dragon. Here Christ appears as the true Passover Lamb. This shows that his rule as mediator, that is, his work as the one who brings God and his people together, comes from his sufferings and is the reason for his people's safety and faithfulness.
Next we see how his people appear, and it is a very honorable picture. In number, they are many, even all who are sealed, and not one of them is lost through all the troubles they have faced. Their mark is the name of God written on their foreheads. They openly confessed their faith in God and Christ, and because that faith showed itself in their lives, they were known and approved.
Their songs of praise are also part of their glory, and these songs belong only to the redeemed (Rev 14:3). Their praise is loud like thunder or the sound of many waters, yet also sweet like harps. It is heavenly, because they sing before the throne of God. The song is new, fitting the new covenant, that is, God's new saving arrangement through Christ, and the new kind and gracious way God was guiding them. Others did not know this song in the true sense, even if they could repeat the words, because strangers could not share their joy.
Their character is also described. They are called virgins because of their purity. They have not polluted themselves with physical or spiritual adultery. They have kept themselves clean from the corruptions of the antichristian generation. They are also known by their faithful loyalty to Christ. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes, meaning they follow his word, his Spirit, and his providence, his wise way of guiding events, and they leave it to him to lead them into whatever duties and trials he chooses.
They are also shown by their earlier calling to this honor. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits to God and to the Lamb (Rev 14:4). This gives clear proof of special redemption, meaning that redeeming mercy set some people apart from others. They were God's chosen ones, first in grace, and an example of many more who would follow them, just as they followed Christ.
Finally, they are marked by their honesty and sincere hearts. No deceit was found in them, and they were without fault before the throne of God. This does not mean they had no human weakness at all. It means no lasting deceit or allowed sin ruled them. Their hearts were right with God, and their remaining faults were freely forgiven in Christ. This is the happy remnant who attend the Lord Jesus as their head and Lord. He is glorified in them, and they are glorified in him.
