Here, David claims his place with God: “I am yours, devoted to you and owned by you, yours by covenant.” He does not say, “You are mine,” as Dr. Manton notes, though that would follow from it. That would be a bolder claim. Instead, he speaks more humbly and obediently by saying, “I am yours.” He is not appealing to his own goodness or worth. He is saying, “I am yours, not my own, not the world’s.”
He then proves that claim: “I have sought your precepts.” In other words, “I have carefully looked into my duty and worked hard to do it.” This is the best proof that we belong to God. Everyone who belongs to him, even if they have not reached perfection, is still seeking it.
Then he puts his claim to use: “I am yours; save me.” Save me from sin. Save me from ruin. Those who truly give themselves to God as his people can be sure that he will protect them and keep them for his heavenly kingdom (Malachi 3:18).
