David is describing how deep his trouble was. He was in affliction and felt close to perishing in it. He was not just in danger of death, but in danger of despair, ready to think that all was lost and that God had turned away from him. That is why he is amazed at God’s goodness, because he had not been destroyed. God kept him in his right mind, and, even more important, kept him close to himself and from being pushed away from his faith.
This is an important comfort for us too. Even if we are not kept from suffering, it is a great mercy if we are kept from being ruined by it. Then we have no reason to say, “I have kept my heart pure in vain,” or, “What is the use of serving God?”
David also tells us what supported him in that hard time. God’s law was his delight. It had been his delight before, and remembering that gave him comfort, because it showed that his heart was sincere. It was still his delight in the middle of his trouble, and that gave him rich comfort when every other source of help felt weak or empty.
When the things of this world, like broken wells, could give no water, he drew living water from God’s truth. Reading and thinking about God’s law was his pleasant company in loneliness and sorrow. A Bible is a good companion at any time, if we are willing to use it that way.
