The psalmist begins by praising the unchanging nature of God’s word and all his plans. “Forever, O Lord, your word is settled.” Some understand this to mean, “You yourself are forever the same,” and that is part of the point. God does not change, and this shows in the firmness of his word. His word, by which the heavens were made, is fixed and secure in the lasting results it produces. Or, the word is settled in heaven, in God’s hidden counsel, which is far above us, unseen and unmoving, like mountains of bronze.
God’s revealed will is just as firm as his hidden will. As he will carry out the thoughts of his heart, so none of his words will fail. That is why the psalm adds, “Your faithfulness is unto all generations.” His promise is sure for every age of the church, and time cannot make it old or useless. Promises that reach far into the future will still be fulfilled at the right time.
The psalmist also points to the steady order of nature as proof. “You have established the earth forever, and it remains.” The earth is still where God first placed it. Though there are deep movements within it, the sea that is woven into it, and the strong shaking of the air around it, it remains steady. The heavens and the earth, with all their hosts, continue to this day according to God’s commands. They stay in the place he assigned them and fulfill the purpose for which he made them.
This same stability in day and night, in heaven and earth, also supports the truth of God’s covenant, as seen in (Jeremiah 31:35-36) and (Jeremiah 33:20-21). By God’s promise to Noah, as in (Genesis 8:22), day and night, summer and winter keep their regular course. They have continued to this day, and they will continue to the end, obeying the laws first given to them. All things are God’s servants, because they do his will and show his glory.
The psalmist’s question is clear: if every creature serves its Creator in its place, and answers the purpose for which it was made, will man alone rebel? Will man be the only one to turn from his loyalty, and the only useless burden on the earth?
