auto_stories Bible Guided Commentary

David prays here for sincerity. He wants his heart to be set on God’s statutes and to be sound in them, not rotten or false. He does not want to rest in the outward form of religion, but to know its power in real life. He asks to be steady and wholehearted in religion, with a soul that is healthy.

He also fears the shame that comes from hypocrisy. Shame is the portion of hypocrites, either in this life, if they turn from their sin, or in the life to come, if they do not. So he prays, “Let my heart be sound, so I do not fall into disgraceful sin, or fall away from God’s ways and shame myself.” He also wants a sound heart so he can come boldly to the throne of grace and lift up his face without shame on the great day.
