Here we see, first, this good man’s confidence in God’s saving help: “I have hoped in your word.” He says, in effect, that he has not trusted in God for nothing. God’s word has not failed him, and he has not been disappointed in what he expected from it. This is a hope that does not put a person to shame, but brings real comfort now and full joy in the end.
We also see the agreement of other good people with him in the joy of that salvation. “Those who fear you will be glad when they see me relieved by my hope in your word, and delivered as I hoped.” The comforts some of God’s children find in God, and the kindness they receive from him, should make other believers glad too. Paul often said that he hoped many people would give thanks for the grace shown to him (2 Corinthians 1:11; 2 Corinthians 4:15). Or this may be understood more generally: godly people are glad to see one another, and they are especially pleased with those who are strong in hoping in God’s word.
